Celebrating the Gift of Independence This Holiday Season

December has a way of slowing us down, even in the busy holiday season. Between parties, packed schedules and last-minute shopping, there are those quiet little moments when we reflect on the year that’s almost behind us.

And as I think about 2025, one word continues to be top of my list: independence.

It’s more than a way of practicing. It’s a gift!

Independence means freedom to choose how you care for your patients—providing the type of care that fills your cup, not dictated by anyone else. It means curating a frame board that reflects your community and your practice vision, not someone else’s sales quota. It means creating a team culture that feels like yours.

That freedom is powerful. But here’s the secret: independence is also a gift we give others.

Every patient who walks through your door experiences something different than they would in a big-box, corporate or online setting. They see a doctor who knows their story, takes their time and builds a personal connection. They’re greeted by staff who recognize their kids, remember their milestones and know their quirks. They receive attentive, unrushed care—a luxury in health care today.

This time of year, it’s easy to get caught up in the numbers—the December rush, year-end targets, insurance headaches. Those things matter. But I’d encourage you to pause for a moment and recognize the bigger picture: the simple, meaningful privilege of doing what you do independently.

So as 2025 comes to an end, I hope you remember that gift. Celebrate the work/life balance and flexibility you have created for yourself. Thank your patients for choosing you and trusting you to care for them. Thank your team for believing in your vision, showing up every day and giving their all.

The new year will bring fresh challenges, opportunities and goals, as it always does. But independence gives you something priceless: the ability to chart your own course into 2026 and beyond.

That, in my mind, is the greatest gift of all.
