Q4 Starts Now: Financial Planning for a Strong Year-End

It’s hard to believe that September is here already! While we may feel like summer was over in a blink, you may be looking at the calendar thinking: How is it almost Q4?! This is one of my favorite times for a reset. While it can be tempting to coast through the rest of the year and look ahead to 2026, we still have the rest of the year to finish strong.

Financially, Q4 is your last big push to meet (or exceed!) your revenue goals. But strong year-end numbers don’t happen by accident. They’re planned—strategically, intentionally and yes, in September.

Here’s the good news: you still have time. Now is the perfect moment to pause, take a breath and look at where your practice stands. Pull your numbers. How’s your revenue year-to-date? Are you on track to your goals? Do you have goals? What’s been working? What needs tightening up?

Where to Start?

Start by reviewing your KPIs—capture rate, average revenue per patient, scheduling density and any areas where things may have slipped over the summer. We have talked about a few of these KPIs this year (and will continue to). Don’t wait until December to realize you missed the mark.

Next, consider your fall opportunities. Back-to-school season brings families in the door. This is a great time to update your kids’ selection of glasses or brush up on myopia management. Dry eye picks up with cooler weather and indoor heat, and there are many wonderful ways to offer these services to your patients. Your optical team can lean into fall fashion with fresh frame styling events. Now is a perfect time for a refresh!

Also, now is a smart time to have a staff huddle about mindset. Make it fun! Offer a team bonus if you hit a monthly milestone or schedule a fall goal board in the break room. Everyone loves a countdown when they’re part of the finish line.

Finally, don’t forget to meet with your accountant or bookkeeper. Are there tax-saving purchases or investments you should make before year-end? Any staffing decisions to plan now for a smoother 2026?

As independents, we wear a lot of hats—but the business owner hat matters just as much as the white coat. September isn’t just for back-to-school. It’s for getting back to business and finishing the year on a high note. You still have time to finish the year strong!
