The Vision Council and EyeMed Vision Care Fueling the Future webinar featured image

The Vision Council Foundation and EyeMed Vision Care present “Fueling the Future: The Next Generation of Eye Care Professionals.” This webinar explores the evolving landscape of the eye care workforce, from early education choices to today’s practice realities and the opportunities to influence its future.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for optometrists is expected to grow 9% from 2023 to 2033—well above the average for all occupations. This surge reflects the rising demands in vision care, largely fueled by an aging population. Yet, one in five providers report a severe or extreme shortage of optometrists. Many point to more training and education pathways as a vital solution. Closing this talent gap will require intentional promotion of career opportunities and proactive pipeline-building, especially in underrepresented and underserved communities.

“Shaping the future of eye care starts with meaningful conversations and intentional collaboration,” Ashley Mills, CEO of The Vision Council, said. “This webinar creates space for industry leaders to connect, share perspectives and spark conversations that will move us forward.” Participants will explore workforce trends, the rising interest in optical careers and strategies to attract and support new talent. The discussion also highlights the importance of early education, student engagement and programs that help strengthen the pipeline from classroom to clinic.

“Whether you’re a provider, educator or industry partner, we all have a role to play in fueling the next generation,” Pete Kehoe, OD, Vice President of Provider Relations at EyeMed Vision Care, said. “This is an opportunity for all of us to reflect on where we are, recognize the strides we’ve made and engage in what’s possible when we work together to shape the future of eye care.”
