Ah, July. Fireworks, cookouts and a whole lot of red, white and blue. But for those of us in the eye care world, it’s also the perfect time to celebrate another kind of independence—the kind that comes from owning your practice, running your own optical and doing things your way.

The Challenge and Reward of Independence

Let’s be honest: Being independent in this industry isn’t always the easy path. You wear a lot of hats—doctor, business owner, buyer, HR, marketer and sometimes even janitor. But the payoff? Huge. When you are in charge, you get to decide what type of care you provide. You don’t have protocols or quotas or have to practice a certain way. You can take the time to listen to your patients (imagine that!), recommend what’s best for them and build relationships that are meaningful and lasting.

Curating Your Eyewear Selection

And the eyewear side? Total freedom. You can curate a collection that reflects your style, your community and your patients’ personalities. Bold, boutique, sustainable or local—you pick. You can even create your own line to showcase your personality. Focusing on quality and offering something different and unique is what makes independent optometry practices and optical shops so special.

Flexibility and Agility as the Boss

Let’s not forget the joy of being nimble. Want to introduce a new lens technology? Try a fresh marketing idea? Update your patient experience without waiting for permission from a regional manager? Add a new specialty? Have you analyzed your data and realized you can work smarter, not harder and drop some insurance plans? You can. Because you’re the boss.

Community Support Among Independents

Of course independence doesn’t mean isolation. One of the best parts of this community is how many independents support each other. Whether it’s sharing supplier tips, helping with marketing ideas or attending one of the new conferences or eyewear shows focused on the independent, we are all in it together.

Take Pride in Independent Eye Care

So this Independence Day, take a moment to appreciate what you’ve built. You’re not just running a practice—you’re creating a space where people feel seen, supported and stylish. You’re delivering care that big-box models or online exams can’t touch. And you’re proving that independent doesn’t mean small. It means powerful, personal and proud.

Here’s to more freedom, more success and practicing in a way that aligns with your personal and professional goals. Keep lighting those sparklers and keep doing what you do best. Independent eye care is worth celebrating this month and every month.
