As we settle into another busy day in our optometry practices, it’s easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle — patient charts to review, appointments to manage, and endless to-do lists. But let’s take a moment to step back and appreciate what a wonderful career we’ve chosen. Seriously, how lucky are we to be optometrists?
Think about it: every day, we have the chance to make a real difference in people’s lives. The joy that lights up a patient’s face when they try on their new glasses for the first time? That’s priceless. Helping someone discover that they can see clearly for the first time in years is an incredible privilege. It’s these moments that remind us why we chose this path in the first place.
Let’s not forget the incredible variety our profession offers. Each patient is a new puzzle to solve, bringing unique stories and challenges. Whether it’s diagnosing a medical condition, fitting someone with contact lenses, or learning a new skill, the day-to-day work keeps us on our toes and engaged. And then there’s the technology! The advancements in diagnostic tools and treatment options have transformed how we care for our patients, allowing us to be more efficient and provide better outcomes than ever before.
And let’s talk about our colleagues. The relationships we build with fellow optometrists, opticians, and support staff are invaluable. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve left a conference feeling inspired by a colleague’s fresh perspective or innovative approach. These colleagues have also become lifelong friends. We share ideas, challenges, and successes. Those connections make our work so much richer.
With opportunity also come challenges, and sometimes the demands in our profession can feel overwhelming. However, these tough times make us strong and teach us resiliency and adaptability. They help us grow not only professionally, but personally. These challenges often shape us the most.
So, as we move through our days, and especially into this season of giving thanks, let’s consciously embrace gratitude for our careers in optometry. Let’s appreciate the lives we touch, the relationships we build, and the impact we make. By cultivating this sense of thankfulness, we can keep our passion alive and remind ourselves why we do what we do. After all, it’s a pretty fantastic journey we’re on — one worth celebrating every single day!
Yours in success,
Jennifer L. Stewart, OD
